Assessing multimetric trophic state variability during an ENSO event in a large estuary (Río de la Plata, South America)

Abstract During the “El Niño”- Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event 2009-2010, trophic state uni (TSI´s) and multimetric (TRIX´s) indexes were determined in the north coast of the Rio de la Plata (RdlP). The relationships of such indexes with the hydrological, physical and chemical parameters were explored to identify climatic variability or anthropogenic effects on the eutrophication […]

Mesozooplancton y variacion ambiental durante el evento ENOS 2009-2010 en la costa norte del esturario del rio de la plata

Previous studies have demonstrated that macro-scale climatic events such as ENSO, cause changes in meteorological and hydrological conditions, inducing physicochemical changes in the water column, as well as in coastal and estuarine communities in the Atlantic Ocean. Rio de la Plata (RdlP) is the second largest estuary of South America, where ENSO is a macro-scale

Management and Monitoring of Eutrophication: Trophic State Indexes on the Río de la Plata Northern Coast

Marine pollution is an introduction by humans, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into marine environments (including estuaries) resulting in such deleterious effects as harm to living resources, hazards to human health, hindrance of marine activities including fishing, impairment of quality for use of sea, and reduction of amenities. Eutrophication process or the enrichment

Intertidal sea anemones (Cnidaria: Actiniaria) from the west coast of the Peninsula of Baja California, Mexico

Nine species of sea anemones are documented from the west coast of the Peninsula of Baja California. Short descriptions of Anthopleura artemisia (Pickering in Dana, 1846), A elegantissima (Brandt, 1835), A. sola Pearse & Francis, 2000 and Epiactis prolifera Verrill, 1869 are provided, including images of the external and internal anatomy, as well as cnidae.

Organochlorine pesticides and chlorpyrifos in the sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii (Actiniaria: Actiniidae) from Argentina’s southeastern coast

Temporal and spatial distribution of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos, one of the main insecticides used in Argentina, was evaluated in two populations of the sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii living under different anthropological stressors: Las Delicias (LD) adjacent to a wastewater plant, and Punta Cantera (PC) a reference site. Pesticides were analyzed

Association between the parasitic larvae of the sea‑anemone Peachia sp. (Cnidaria: Haloclavidae) and hydromedusae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) in the temperate Southwestern Atlantic Ocean

This present study describes for the first time the annual seasonality of a peculiar association between two different groups of cnidarians in temperate waters of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean: the parasitic larval phase of the sea anemone Peachia sp. (Anthozoa) with the hydromedusa Liriope tetraphylla and Eucheilota ventricularis (Hydrozoa) from Mar del Plata, Argentina. As

Occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii, sediments and seawater from the southwestern Atlantic

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent and bioaccumulable organic compounds. The occurrence of PCBs was assessed in two populations of the intertidal sea anemone Bunodosoma zamponii living under different anthropogenic strains. One location was in vicinity to a wastewater plant (Las Delicias, LD), and the other was a preserved location chosen as a reference site (Punta

Ceriantharia (Cnidaria) of the World: an annotated catalogue and key to species

The diversity of Ceriantharia is known from studies formally describing species from the late 18th Century onwards. However, no nomenclators including a list and discussion of all valid species have been produced since a list discussed by Carlgren in 1912. The present nomenclator presents a complete list of adult species of Ceriantharia of the World, including a discussion on each

Statistical analysis on the cnidome of genus Hydra using Generalized Linear Models

In the systematics of cnidarians, the different types of cnidocysts are considered an important taxonomic character. In Hydra, the four types of cnidocysts found in the ectoderm, concentrated in tentacles and their measurements, together withother morphological and reproductive characteristics, are very important for the taxonomy of the species. In this study, weexplore in detail the biometric
